Today, I would like to tell you about a time when I worked in a group, which was when I joined a school project with several of my classmates.

The team was made up of five students, and we were all quite close friends. We had different personalities and complementary skill sets (bộ kỹ năng bổ trợ – different abilities that work well together), so everyone could contribute in a different way.

I decided to join the group because I wanted to improve my teamwork skills and also learn from my peers. More importantly, I saw it as a golden opportunity (cơ hội tuyệt vời – an excellent chance to do or achieve something) to step outside my comfort zone and take on a new challenge.

My main responsibility was to gather information and put together the presentation slides. I also helped coordinate our group dynamics (sự tương tác trong nhóm – the way members communicate and work with one another) and made sure everyone stayed on track. We had to work under a tight deadline, so we held several brainstorming sessions and divided the workload according to each person’s strengths.

At first, the project was slightly stressful because we had some clashing viewpoints (quan điểm trái ngược – strongly different opinions) about how to approach the topic. However, instead of letting those disagreements get in the way (cản trở – prevent progress), we learned to listen to one another and reach a compromise. For example, when two members disagreed over the presentation format, I suggested combining their ideas, which ultimately made the final presentation more engaging and well-rounded (toàn diện, cân bằng – covering different aspects effectively).>> 🔥 Nhắn zalo 0905834420 join group zalo Hóng đề thi máy 4 skills để cập nhật đề thi thật 4 kĩ năng hằng ngày [Kèm giải & đề làm online]

Overall, I found the experience extremely rewarding for two main reasons. First, it helped me develop interpersonal skills (kỹ năng giao tiếp và ứng xử – abilities needed to communicate and interact effectively with others), especially communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution; for instance, I became much more confident about expressing my opinions without dominating the discussion. Second, it gave me a strong sense of collective achievement (thành tựu chung – a success accomplished by a group rather than an individual), because we managed to deliver a polished presentation despite the initial disagreements and time pressure. Looking back, I felt a real sense of camaraderie (cảm giác gắn bó, đoàn kết – a strong feeling of friendship and mutual support) and realised that effective teamwork is not simply about dividing tasks, but about pooling our strengths and working towards a common goal.

IV. Part 3

1. Do you prefer to work in a team or on your own?

I personally prefer working in a team because collaborative (involving people working together – mang tính hợp tác) environments allow me to exchange ideas and approach problems from different angles.
One major advantage is that collective problem-solving (the process of solving problems together – giải quyết vấn đề tập thể) can produce more creative and well-rounded solutions than working in isolation.
For example, when several people brainstorm a project, one person's suggestion can spark a chain reaction (cause a series of related ideas or developments – tạo ra một chuỗi ý tưởng liên tiếp) and inspire others to come up with even better alternatives.
Another reason is that teamwork can make demanding tasks feel more manageable because responsibilities can be divided according to each person's strengths.
This creates a well-coordinated (carefully organised so that people work effectively together – được phối hợp chặt chẽ) working environment in which everyone contributes to a shared objective.
For instance, in a group presentation, one person can conduct research while another designs the slides and someone else delivers the presentation.
That said, I can also appreciate working alone when I need undisturbed concentration (complete focus without interruptions – sự tập trung không bị gián đoạn) or want to make decisions independently.
Overall, however, I would choose teamwork because I believe cross-functional collaboration (cooperation between people with different skills or areas of expertise – sự hợp tác giữa những người có chuyên môn khác nhau) tends to produce stronger results and helps people learn from one another.

    • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: “cross-functional collaboration tends to produce stronger results.”

2. Why do some people prefer to work on their own?

I think some people prefer working independently because it gives them a greater sense of autonomy (the freedom to make one's own decisions – quyền tự chủ).
They do not have to constantly consult colleagues, compromise over minor issues, or wait for other people before moving forward with a task.
For example, a highly experienced designer may prefer to work alone because they can call the shots (make the important decisions – tự mình quyết định) and follow their own creative process.
Another important reason is that some individuals simply have different working styles and find group discussions distracting or inefficient.
People who are naturally self-directed (able to organise and motivate themselves without supervision – có khả năng tự định hướng) may actually be more productive when they have complete control over their workload.
For instance, someone preparing a detailed financial report might achieve better results in a quiet office than in a high-interaction workplace where colleagues frequently interrupt them.
Working independently can also provide a stronger sense of personal accountability because there is no one else to share responsibility with if something goes wrong.
Ultimately, therefore, people who value personal agency (the ability to control one's own actions and decisions – khả năng tự chủ trong hành động và quyết định) may find solo work more satisfying than a highly collaborative working environment.

3. What kinds of jobs require people to work in a team?

A wide range of professions require teamwork, particularly those in which employees have to combine different areas of expertise to achieve a common objective.
One obvious example is the healthcare sector, where doctors, nurses, pharmacists and technicians need to engage in interdisciplinary cooperation (cooperation between people from different professional fields – sự hợp tác liên ngành).
A complex medical case, for instance, may require several specialists to share information and coordinate treatment rather than relying on a single professional.
Another field that is heavily dependent on teamwork is construction because large-scale projects involve architects, engineers, contractors and construction workers.
These professionals must maintain seamless coordination (extremely smooth cooperation without disruption – sự phối hợp liền mạch) to ensure that a project is completed safely, efficiently and on schedule.
For example, if architects alter a building design, engineers and contractors may need to adjust their plans immediately to prevent costly delays.
The technology industry is another good example because software developers, UX designers and project managers often work together on multidisciplinary projects (projects involving several different areas of expertise – dự án đa chuyên môn).
In short, jobs involving complex operations, shared responsibility and tight deadlines are particularly likely to require employees to work in tandem (work closely together toward the same goal – phối hợp chặt chẽ với nhau).

    • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: “employees are particularly likely to work in tandem.”

4. What qualities do you think a good team member should have?

I believe a good team member needs to have strong interpersonal skills (the ability to communicate and interact effectively with others – kỹ năng giao tiếp và tương tác với người khác).
This is because effective teamwork depends not only on technical expertise but also on people's ability to listen carefully, communicate clearly and resolve disagreements constructively.
For example, an employee who can bridge the gap (connect people or ideas that are different – thu hẹp khoảng cách) between two colleagues with opposing opinions can prevent a minor disagreement from escalating into a serious conflict.
Another essential quality is emotional intelligence (the ability to understand and manage one's own and other people's emotions – trí tuệ cảm xúc).
A team member with emotional intelligence is more likely to remain calm under pressure, show empathy and recognise when a colleague needs support.
For instance, if a co-worker is struggling with a demanding deadline, an emotionally intelligent colleague might offer practical assistance rather than criticising them.
I also think intellectual humility (the willingness to recognise that one's knowledge or opinions may be limited – sự khiêm tốn về mặt trí tuệ) is extremely valuable because no individual has all the answers.
Ultimately, the best team members are those who can pull their weight (do their fair share of the work – hoàn thành phần việc của mình một cách công bằng) while remaining open-minded, dependable and respectful toward their colleagues.
