IELTS TUTOR gợi ý bài tham khảo:
Today, I would like to tell you about a friend’s home that I visited a few months ago but honestly wouldn’t want to live in myself. It belongs to one of my close friends from university, who lives in a modern apartment in the city center. Although the place looked luxurious and stylish at first glance, I realized after spending a weekend there that it simply didn’t suit my lifestyle or personality.
The first reason why I wouldn’t want to live there is that the apartment had an extremely fast-paced (nhịp độ nhanh – full of rapid activity and movement) atmosphere. Since it was located in a traffic-congested neighborhood (khu dân cư tắc nghẽn giao thông – an area filled with heavy traffic) right in the heart of the city, the surroundings were incredibly noisy from dawn till midnight. I could constantly hear car horns, construction work, and the hustle and bustle of street vendors downstairs. As someone who values peace and quiet, I found it mentally exhausting. For example, when I tried to study for an upcoming exam there, I got distracted every few minutes because of the overwhelming noise pollution. Besides that, the apartment itself was quite cramped (chật chội – too small and uncomfortable due to lack of space) despite its expensive appearance. The living room and kitchen were combined into one tiny area, which made the whole place feel somewhat claustrophobic.
Another reason is that the home had a very minimalist interior (nội thất tối giản – a design style using only essential items), which, although trendy, felt cold and impersonal to me. Everything was decorated in black, white, and gray tones, giving the apartment a rather sterile (lạnh lẽo, vô cảm – lacking warmth or emotion) vibe. There were hardly any family photos, indoor plants, or sentimental decorations that could create a cozy atmosphere. In contrast, I grew up in a close-knit household (gia đình gắn bó – a family with strong relationships and emotional connection) where warmth and comfort were always prioritized over appearance. For instance, my own home is filled with handmade furniture, colorful decorations, and shared family spaces that encourage interaction. Meanwhile, my friend’s apartment seemed more like a showroom than an actual home. Even though it was undeniably state-of-the-art (hiện đại tối tân – using the most modern technology or design) with smart devices and high-tech appliances, it lacked the sense of comfort and emotional connection that I personally look for in a living environment.
To sum up, although my friend’s apartment was modern and visually impressive, its noisy surroundings and emotionally detached atmosphere made me realize that I would never want to live there permanently.

IV. PART 3
1. Do people still visit other people’s homes nowadays?
Yes, I believe home visits are still quite common, although they are less frequent than in the past because many people now lead a fast-paced (nhịp độ nhanh – happening very quickly and busily) lifestyle.
One reason is that modern employees often have time-consuming (tốn thời gian – taking a lot of time) work schedules, so they tend to socialize in cafés or restaurants instead of gathering at someone’s house.
For example, many office workers in Vietnam prefer meeting their friends at coffee shops after work because it is more convenient and requires less preparation.
However, I also think visiting other people’s homes remains an important way to strengthen personal relationships and create a sense of intimacy.
When people are invited into someone’s living space, conversations usually become more genuine and heart-to-heart (chân thành, cởi mở – honest and emotionally open).
In addition, home visits are especially popular during family-oriented occasions such as Lunar New Year, birthdays, or housewarming parties.
For instance, during Tet holiday, Vietnamese families often travel long distances to visit relatives and neighbors in order to maintain close-knit bonds.

→ dùng để giải thích nguyên nhân.
2. What gifts do people usually bring when visiting someone’s home?
I think people normally bring practical or meaningful gifts when they visit someone’s home, especially during special occasions.
One common choice is food or beverages because they can easily be shared among family members and guests.
For example, visitors often buy imported snacks, fruit baskets, or premium tea sets when attending a dinner party or a housewarming celebration.
Another popular option is giving decorative items because many people want to help the host beautify their living space.
Items such as scented candles, handmade ornaments, or eye-catching (bắt mắt – visually attractive) decorations are considered thoughtful and polite gifts.
In Vietnamese culture, gift-giving is also viewed as a way to express gratitude and maintain long-lasting (lâu dài – continuing for a long time) relationships.
As a result, people usually spend a considerable amount of time choosing something suitable instead of buying random products.
For instance, if the homeowner is interested in cooking, guests may purchase kitchen appliances or cooking ingredients that match the host’s preferences.
New Vocabulary
- eye-catching (bắt mắt – visually attractive)

→ câu điều kiện loại 1 dùng để nói tình huống thực tế.
3. Do people give flowers or plants when visiting someone?
Yes, flowers and plants are quite popular gifts because they symbolize positivity and good fortune in many cultures.
One reason is that flowers can make a home feel more vibrant and create a welcoming atmosphere for both residents and guests.
For example, roses and lilies are commonly given during formal visits because they look elegant and carry positive meanings.
Besides flowers, many people nowadays prefer potted plants because they are more environmentally friendly and can last much longer.
A small low-maintenance (ít cần chăm sóc – requiring little care) plant, such as a cactus or succulent, can brighten up a room without demanding too much attention from the owner.
In addition, giving plants reflects the growing trend toward an eco-friendly (thân thiện với môi trường – not harmful to the environment) lifestyle.
Young adults, in particular, tend to choose indoor plants because they improve air quality and add a natural touch to modern apartments.
For instance, some people even give mini bonsai trees as gifts since they are both decorative and culturally meaningful.

→ dùng để giải thích lý do. - Comparative structure:
“can last much longer.”
→ so sánh tuổi thọ của cây với hoa.
4. What factors should people consider when choosing a city to live in?
I think people should carefully consider several important factors before deciding where to live because the choice can strongly affect their quality of life.
One major factor is career opportunities since many individuals move to large cities in search of better salaries and professional growth.
For example, metropolitan areas often provide a wider range of jobs, especially in highly competitive industries such as finance, technology, and marketing.
Another essential factor is the overall living environment, including transportation systems, healthcare services, and public safety.
People usually prefer cities with a well-developed infrastructure because it allows them to commute more efficiently and access essential facilities more easily.
In addition, the cost of living should also be taken into account because some cities are extremely expensive for average-income earners.
For instance, although global cities may offer numerous opportunities, residents sometimes struggle with sky-high rent and overcrowded (quá đông đúc – filled with too many people) neighborhoods.
Therefore, choosing a suitable city requires balancing financial concerns, personal preferences, and long-term goals.
New Vocabulary
- well-developed infrastructure (cơ sở hạ tầng phát triển – advanced public systems and facilities)
Synonyms: modern facilities, advanced infrastructure, efficient systems

“Although global cities may offer numerous opportunities…”
→ dùng để nhượng bộ. - Gerund phrase after “requires”:
“requires balancing financial concerns…”
→ động từ thêm -ing sau “require”.
5. How are homes in cities different from homes in the countryside?
I think urban and rural homes differ significantly in terms of size, environment, and lifestyle.
One noticeable difference is that city houses are usually smaller because land in urban areas is extremely expensive and limited.
For example, many families in big cities live in compact apartments or narrow townhouses instead of spacious detached homes.
By contrast, countryside homes are often larger and surrounded by open spaces such as gardens, rice fields, or rivers.
Another major difference is the living environment because rural areas are generally quieter and less polluted than metropolitan regions.
People living in the countryside can enjoy a more laid-back (thoải mái, thư giãn – relaxed and slow-paced) lifestyle, whereas city dwellers often experience stress caused by traffic congestion and noise pollution.
In addition, urban homes tend to be equipped with more state-of-the-art (hiện đại tối tân – using the most modern technology) appliances and modern facilities.
For instance, smart-home systems and high-speed internet are far more common in cities due to better technological infrastructure.

“equipped with more state-of-the-art appliances”
→ mệnh đề rút gọn bị động.
