IELTS TUTOR gợi ý bài tham khảo:

Today, I would like to tell you about a joint decision that I made with my best friend regarding booking a last-minute trip to Da Nang during our final summer vacation at university.

We made this decision about a year ago when both of us were burnt out (burnt out – English: extremely tired or exhausted due to overwork | Vietnamese: kiệt sức do làm việc quá sức) after a stressful exam season and wanted to unwind before starting our internships.

What made this decision particularly interesting was not just the destination, but the way it unfolded and what we learned from it. Firstly, we decided everything spontaneously — from choosing the destination to finding a cozy Airbnb. This kind of spur-of-the-moment (spur-of-the-moment – English: done without planning | Vietnamese: bất chợt, không có kế hoạch trước) decision taught us how to think on our feet (think on one's feet – English: respond quickly to unexpected situations | Vietnamese: phản ứng nhanh, linh hoạt) and trust our instincts.>> tham khảo CẦN VIẾT & THU ÂM BAO NHIÊU BÀI ĐỂ ĐẠT 8.0 SPEAKING & 7.0 WRITING?

Secondly, the experience was bond-strengthening (bond-strengthening – English: enhancing the relationship between people | Vietnamese: tăng cường mối quan hệ) because we had to cooperate in everything — from budgeting to creating an itinerary. I still remember how we divvied up (divvied up – English: divided something between people | Vietnamese: chia sẻ, phân công) responsibilities: I handled transportation while she looked after the accommodation and food. Despite a few hiccups like missing a train and getting lost in the old town, these moments made the trip unforgettable. It really highlighted how shared experiences (shared experiences – English: events that people go through together | Vietnamese: trải nghiệm chung) can bring people closer and enhance mutual understanding.

All in all, the trip was not just a vacation — it was a meaningful lesson in collaboration and spontaneity (spontaneity – English: doing things without being planned | Vietnamese: sự tự phát), which I truly cherish.

IV. Part 3

Q: Do you think cooperation is always good?
I would say cooperation is generally beneficial (có lợi – producing positive results) because it helps people achieve collective goals (mục tiêu chung – shared objectives of a group) that individuals cannot manage alone, as seen when international scientists collaborated to develop vaccines during the pandemic.
At the same time, excessive cooperation can become counterproductive (phản tác dụng – having the opposite effect of what was intended) when it leads to groupthink (tư duy bầy đàn – a situation where everyone agrees without critical thinking), for instance when business teams ignore risks just to keep harmony.

New Vocabulary with Vietnamese definition, synonyms & antonyms

  • beneficial (có lợi – producing positive results)
    Synonyms: advantageous, favorable, valuable
    Antonyms: harmful, detrimental, damaging
IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: "cooperation is generally beneficial because it helps people achieve collective goals…"

  • collective goals (mục tiêu chung – shared objectives of a group)
Synonyms: common aims, joint objectives, shared purposes
Antonyms: individual aims, personal targets, private purposes
IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: "because it helps people achieve collective goals that individuals cannot manage alone…"

  • counterproductive (phản tác dụng – having the opposite effect of what was intended)
    Synonyms: self-defeating, adverse, inefficient
    Antonyms: effective, constructive, fruitful

  • groupthink (tư duy bầy đàn – a situation where everyone agrees without critical thinking)
Synonyms: herd mentality, mass conformity, blind consensus
Antonyms: independent thinking, critical reasoning, individual judgment
IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: "when it leads to groupthink, for instance when business teams ignore risks…"

Difficult Grammar Structures & Explanation

  1. Complex sentence with cause and result

    • “I would say cooperation is generally beneficial because it helps people achieve collective goals that individuals cannot manage alone.”

    • → Explanation: Clause of reason (because) + relative clause (that individuals cannot manage alone).

    • Simple rewrite: “Cooperation is good because it helps people reach goals.”

    • Vietnamese: “Tôi cho rằng hợp tác thường có lợi vì nó giúp con người đạt được các mục tiêu mà cá nhân không thể làm một mình.”

  2. Reduced clause with participle

    • “...as seen when international scientists collaborated to develop vaccines during the pandemic.”

    • → Explanation: Passive participle phrase as seen replaces “as it can be seen.”

    • Simple rewrite: “This can be seen when scientists worked together on vaccines.”

    • Vietnamese: “Điều này có thể thấy khi các nhà khoa học hợp tác phát triển vắc-xin trong đại dịch.”

  3. Conditional-like structure

    • “...when it leads to groupthink, for instance when business teams ignore risks just to keep harmony.”

    • → Explanation: when clause here works like a conditional.

    • Simple rewrite: “It is bad if it leads to groupthink.”

    • Vietnamese: “Điều đó trở nên tệ khi nó dẫn đến tư duy bầy đàn, ví dụ như khi nhóm kinh doanh bỏ qua rủi ro để giữ hòa thuận.”

Q: Are there situations where cooperation can be harmful?

Yes, cooperation may turn detrimental (gây hại – causing damage or harm) when people sacrifice individual creativity (sáng tạo cá nhân – original ideas from one person) just to conform, as in some corporations where innovative thinkers are silenced to maintain consensus.
Another case is when collaboration becomes time-consuming (tốn thời gian – taking a lot of time) due to endless meetings, for example in government projects where decision-making is delayed by too many stakeholders.

Q: How do children learn cooperation through team sports?

Children often gain social discipline (kỷ luật xã hội – the ability to behave responsibly within a group) since sports require following rules and respecting teammates, as in football where players must pass rather than only chase personal glory.
They also develop conflict resolution skills (kỹ năng giải quyết xung đột – the ability to handle disagreements constructively) because disputes are inevitable during games, for example when referees’ decisions spark arguments but children must accept them to continue playing.

Q: If cooperation becomes counterproductive, like in the case of autistic children, should it continue?

I think cooperation should be adaptable (có thể thích ứng – capable of adjusting to suit conditions) so autistic children can engage in activities designed for their unique learning styles (phong cách học tập đặc thù – individual ways of processing knowledge), such as smaller group tasks instead of large team sports.
Still, forcing them into unsuitable cooperation is detrimental (gây hại – causing harm or damage) because it can increase anxiety, for instance when a child is pressured to perform group tasks they are uncomfortable with.

New Vocabulary with Vietnamese definition, synonyms & antonyms

  • detrimental (gây hại – causing damage or harm)
    Synonyms: harmful, damaging, injurious
    Antonyms: beneficial, advantageous, favorable

    Synonyms: lengthy, slow, inefficient
    Antonyms: quick, efficient, prompt
Example: "collaboration becomes time-consuming due to endless meetings…"

  • social discipline (kỷ luật xã hội – the ability to behave responsibly within a group)
Synonyms: civic responsibility, group order, collective discipline
    Antonyms: disorder, disobedience, indiscipline
Example: "Children often gain social discipline since sports require following rules…"

  • conflict resolution skills (kỹ năng giải quyết xung đột – ability to handle disagreements constructively)
Synonyms: mediation skills, negotiation skills, problem-solving ability
    Antonyms: conflict escalation, intolerance, stubbornness
Example: "They also develop conflict resolution skills because disputes are inevitable…"

  • adaptable (có thể thích ứng – capable of adjusting to suit conditions)
    Synonyms: flexible, adjustable, versatile
    Antonyms: rigid, fixed, inflexible
Example: "cooperation should be adaptable so autistic children can engage…"

  • unique learning styles (phong cách học tập đặc thù – individual ways of processing knowledge)
Synonyms: personal learning approach, distinctive method, individual learning preference
Antonyms: standard method, uniform approach, common pattern
Example: "activities designed for their unique learning styles…"

Difficult Grammar Structures & Explanations

  3. Conditional implication

    • Simple rewrite: “It is harmful if a child is pressured to do group tasks.”

    • Vietnamese: “Điều đó gây hại nếu trẻ bị ép làm các nhiệm vụ nhóm.”
