IELTS TUTOR gợi ý bài tham khảo:

Today, I would like to tell you about my close friend, Minh, who is exceptionally good at learning and speaking new languages. I’ve known him for about five years because we studied at the same school.

He has a very methodical approach (cách tiếp cận có hệ thống – an organized and systematic way of doing something) to language learning. Instead of simply memorizing vocabulary, he immerses himself in the language by watching films, listening to podcasts, reading articles, and chatting with native speakers. He also keeps a language-learning journal (sổ tay học ngôn ngữ – a notebook used to record and review language-related knowledge), where he writes down new expressions and reviews them on a regular basis.

What I find particularly impressive is his ability to pick up (tiếp thu nhanh – to learn something quickly and naturally) languages through everyday exposure. For instance, whenever he comes across an unfamiliar phrase, he tries to figure out its meaning from context before looking it up. This context-driven learning (việc học dựa trên ngữ cảnh – learning by understanding words through their surrounding context) allows him to remember expressions for much longer rather than relying on rote memorization (học thuộc lòng máy móc – learning something through repetition without fully understanding it).

As far as I know, he can speak four languages fluently: Vietnamese, English, Japanese, and Korean. He is also currently learning Spanish, so he seems to have a real knack for languages (năng khiếu học ngôn ngữ – a natural ability to learn languages). What’s more, he doesn’t just focus on grammar; he pays close attention to intonation and pronunciation (ngữ điệu và phát âm – the rise and fall of the voice and the way words are pronounced), which makes his speech sound remarkably natural.

I’m genuinely in awe of (thán phục – extremely impressed by) his linguistic ability, mainly for two reasons. First, his self-discipline (tính tự giác – the ability to control oneself and consistently follow a plan) is remarkable because he sets aside time every single day to practise, even when he is busy. For example, he usually spends at least an hour listening to podcasts or speaking with foreigners, which has helped him make steady progress (tiến bộ ổn định – continuous improvement over time). Second, I admire his cultural adaptability (khả năng thích nghi văn hóa – the ability to adjust to different cultural environments) because learning several languages has enabled him to understand different ways of thinking and communicate with people from diverse backgrounds. For instance, when he travelled to Japan, he was able to strike up conversations with locals and break the ice (phá vỡ sự ngại ngùng ban đầu – make people feel more comfortable when meeting for the first time) almost effortlessly.

IV. Part 3

2.1. Why are some people better at learning languages than others?

I think two main factors come into play (idiom – play a role/influence; phát huy tác dụng, đóng vai trò) when it comes to explaining why some people are better language learners than others.
First and foremost, some individuals have a natural linguistic aptitude (n – a natural ability to learn languages; năng khiếu ngôn ngữ bẩm sinh), which enables them to pick up pronunciation, vocabulary and grammatical patterns relatively quickly.
For instance, someone with a good ear for sounds may be able to imitate native speakers and develop near-native pronunciation with considerably less effort.
Another crucial factor is intrinsic motivation (n – motivation that comes from within; động lực nội tại), because highly motivated learners are generally more willing to put in sustained effort over a long period.
They are also more likely to embrace mistakes (collocation – accept mistakes as part of learning; chấp nhận lỗi sai như một phần của quá trình học) rather than feeling embarrassed whenever they make an error.
For example, a student who regularly chats with foreigners may make hundreds of mistakes but gradually become more fluent and confident through constant practice.
In contrast, a person who is afraid of being judged may avoid speaking altogether, which can significantly slow down their progress.
So, although talent can give someone a head start, I would argue that consistent effort (collocation – regular and sustained effort; nỗ lực đều đặn và bền bỉ) and a willingness to put themselves out there (idiom – take risks and actively engage with others; chủ động bước ra khỏi vùng an toàn) are ultimately more decisive.

New vocabulary

  • linguistic aptitude: a natural ability to learn languages — năng khiếu/nghiêng về khả năng học ngôn ngữ bẩm sinh.
Synonyms: language ability, linguistic talent, verbal aptitude
Antonyms: linguistic difficulty, language impairment, verbal weakness
Example: “Some individuals have a natural linguistic aptitude.”
  • intrinsic motivation: motivation that comes from personal interest rather than external rewards — động lực xuất phát từ bên trong.
Synonyms: inner motivation, self-motivation, internal drive
    Antonyms: extrinsic motivation, reluctance, apathy
Example: “Another crucial factor is intrinsic motivation.”
  • embrace mistakes: accept mistakes positively as part of learning — chấp nhận và coi lỗi sai là một phần của quá trình học.
Synonyms: accept errors, learn from mistakes, welcome setbacks
Antonyms: avoid mistakes, fear failure, reject criticism
Example: “They are more likely to embrace mistakes.”
  • consistent effort: regular and sustained effort — nỗ lực đều đặn và bền bỉ.
Synonyms: sustained effort, persistent work, steady endeavour
    Antonyms: inconsistency, idleness, sporadic effort
Example:Consistent effort and a willingness to put themselves out there are ultimately more decisive.”
  • put oneself out there: actively take risks and engage with others — chủ động bước ra khỏi vùng an toàn.
Synonyms: take a risk, step outside one's comfort zone, make oneself vulnerable
Antonyms: withdraw, hold back, play it safe
Example: “A willingness to put themselves out there is ultimately more decisive.”

2.2. Is it easier for children to learn languages?

Yes, I would say children generally have an advantage when it comes to acquiring a foreign language.
One reason is that their developing brains are particularly receptive to linguistic input (collocation – able to absorb language information easily; dễ tiếp thu đầu vào ngôn ngữ), especially pronunciation, intonation and basic grammatical patterns.
As a result, they can often pick up (phrasal verb – learn or acquire naturally; tiếp thu một cách tự nhiên) unfamiliar sounds without consciously analysing how the language works.
For example, a young child who grows up hearing two languages every day may switch between them quite naturally and develop remarkably accurate pronunciation.
Another advantage is that children tend to be less self-conscious (adj – worried about being judged by others; ngại ngùng, lo bị người khác đánh giá) than adults when communicating.
They are usually willing to experiment with unfamiliar words and learn through trial and error (collocation – learn by trying and correcting mistakes; học thông qua thử và sai) without worrying too much about making mistakes.
For instance, a child might confidently invent a grammatical structure, receive correction from a teacher, and immediately try using the correct version again.
Therefore, while adults may have stronger analytical skills and a larger knowledge base, children often have a clear edge in terms of pronunciation, spontaneity and natural language acquisition.

New vocabulary

  • receptive to linguistic input: able and willing to absorb language information — dễ tiếp thu âm thanh, từ vựng và cấu trúc ngôn ngữ.
Synonyms: responsive to language, open to input, highly absorbent
Antonyms: resistant to input, unreceptive, linguistically rigid
Example: “Their developing brains are particularly receptive to linguistic input.”
  • pick up: learn something naturally or informally — tiếp thu một cách tự nhiên, không cần học quá có ý thức.
    Synonyms: learn, acquire, grasp
    Antonyms: forget, lose, misunderstand
Example: “They can often pick up unfamiliar sounds.”
  • self-conscious: overly concerned about how other people perceive you — tự ti/ngại ngùng vì lo người khác đánh giá.
    Synonyms: insecure, embarrassed, uneasy
    Antonyms: confident, self-assured, uninhibited
Example: “Children tend to be less self-conscious than adults.”
  • learn through trial and error: learn by trying different approaches and correcting mistakes — học bằng cách thử nghiệm và sửa lỗi.
Synonyms: learn by experimentation, learn from mistakes, learn by doing
Antonyms: learn passively, follow instructions blindly, avoid experimentation
Example: “They learn through trial and error without worrying too much about mistakes.”

2.3. What is the best way to learn a foreign language?

In my view, the most effective approach is to combine structured study with real-world exposure (compound noun – contact with language in authentic situations; sự tiếp xúc với ngôn ngữ trong đời thực).
On the one hand, learners need a solid foundation in grammar, vocabulary and sentence structure so that they can communicate accurately.
For example, understanding how verb tenses work can prevent learners from repeatedly making basic grammatical errors.
On the other hand, they need to use the language regularly in meaningful situations rather than simply memorising long lists of words.
This kind of active language use (collocation – using a language to communicate rather than just studying it; sử dụng ngôn ngữ một cách chủ động) can dramatically improve fluency, listening comprehension and confidence.
For instance, watching English-language films, listening to podcasts or having conversations with native speakers can help learners develop a feel for natural expressions and pronunciation.
Most importantly, they need to maintain long-term consistency (compound noun – regular commitment over an extended period; sự duy trì đều đặn trong thời gian dài) because language acquisition rarely happens overnight.
As the saying goes, language learning is a marathon, not a sprint (idiomatic expression – progress requires patience rather than speed; học ngôn ngữ cần sự kiên trì chứ không thể đạt kết quả tức thời), so learners should stick with the process even when progress seems slow.

New vocabulary

  • real-world exposure: contact with something in authentic, everyday situations — sự tiếp xúc với ngôn ngữ trong môi trường thực tế.
Synonyms: authentic exposure, practical experience, real-life contact
Antonyms: limited exposure, isolation, theoretical learning
Example: “The most effective approach is to combine structured study with real-world exposure.”
  • active language use: using a language actively for communication — việc sử dụng ngôn ngữ một cách chủ động.
Synonyms: practical language use, communicative practice, active communication
Antonyms: passive learning, rote memorisation, theoretical study
Example: “This kind of active language use can dramatically improve fluency.”
  • long-term consistency: maintaining regular effort over a long period — sự duy trì đều đặn và bền bỉ trong thời gian dài.
Synonyms: sustained commitment, persistent effort, long-term dedication
Antonyms: inconsistency, short-term effort, sporadic practice
Example: “They need to maintain long-term consistency.”
  • stick with: continue doing something despite difficulties — kiên trì với, tiếp tục làm gì đó.
Synonyms: persist with, persevere with, keep at
    Antonyms: give up, abandon, quit
Example: “Learners should stick with the process even when progress seems slow.”
  • a marathon, not a sprint: something that requires patience and sustained effort — một quá trình cần sự kiên trì lâu dài.
Synonyms: long-term process, gradual journey, sustained endeavour
Antonyms: quick fix, overnight success, short-term solution
Example:Language learning is a marathon, not a sprint.”

2.4. Why do people learn foreign languages?

I think people learn foreign languages primarily because they want to broaden their personal and professional horizons.
From a career perspective, being able to communicate in another language can provide access to better employment prospects (collocation – improved opportunities to find a job; triển vọng việc làm tốt hơn), particularly in multinational companies and internationally oriented industries.
For example, an employee who speaks English fluently may be considered for overseas assignments or positions involving international clients.
Language learning also enables people to develop cross-cultural competence (compound noun – the ability to understand and interact effectively across cultures; năng lực giao tiếp và thấu hiểu giữa các nền văn hóa).
By learning another language, people gain insight into different customs, values and ways of thinking rather than viewing the world entirely through their own cultural lens.
For instance, someone learning Japanese may gradually become more aware of Japanese social etiquette and communication styles.
In addition, speaking another language can open doors (idiom – create new opportunities; mở ra những cơ hội mới) for travel, education, friendships and international experiences.
Ultimately, in an increasingly globalised world (compound adjective – connected internationally through trade, communication and culture; toàn cầu hóa), knowing a foreign language can be a genuine game-changer (n – something that significantly changes a situation; yếu tố tạo ra thay đổi lớn) both personally and professionally.

New vocabulary

  • better employment prospects: better opportunities for employment and career development — triển vọng việc làm tốt hơn.
Synonyms: career opportunities, job prospects, employment opportunities
Antonyms: limited prospects, unemployment, poor job opportunities
Example: “It can provide access to better employment prospects.”
  • cross-cultural competence: ability to understand and interact effectively with people from different cultures — năng lực giao tiếp và thấu hiểu liên văn hóa.
Synonyms: intercultural competence, cultural awareness, cross-cultural literacy
    Antonyms: cultural ignorance, intolerance, ethnocentrism
Example: “Language learning also enables people to develop cross-cultural competence.”

Synonyms: create opportunities, pave the way, broaden possibilities
Antonyms: close doors, restrict opportunities, create barriers
Example: “Speaking another language can open doors for travel and education.”
  • globalised world: a world increasingly connected through international interaction — thế giới ngày càng toàn cầu hóa và kết nối.
Synonyms: interconnected world, internationalised world, global society
Antonyms: isolated world, localised society, disconnected community
Example: “In an increasingly globalised world...”
  • game-changer: something that has a major transformative effect — yếu tố tạo ra thay đổi lớn.
Synonyms: turning point, breakthrough, transformative factor
    Antonyms: minor factor, setback, hindrance
Example: “Knowing a foreign language can be a genuine game-changer.”

2.5. Can technology help language learning?

Absolutely, and I would say technology has fundamentally transformed the way people learn foreign languages.
First, digital platforms give learners round-the-clock access (compound phrase – access available at any time; khả năng tiếp cận 24/7) to lessons, vocabulary exercises and pronunciation practice regardless of where they live.
For example, someone in a remote area can now use an online course or language-learning app instead of having to travel to a language centre.
Second, technology provides enormous exposure to authentic input (collocation – contact with genuine language used by native speakers; tiếp xúc với ngôn ngữ chân thực) through podcasts, films, social media and online news.
This is particularly useful because learners can hear natural accents, informal expressions and real-world vocabulary that textbooks may not always cover.
For instance, an AI-powered language tool can simulate conversations and immediately point out pronunciation or grammatical errors.
However, technology is only a learning aid, and learners still need self-discipline (n – the ability to control oneself and maintain effort; tính tự giác) to use these resources consistently rather than getting distracted by entertainment.
Overall, when used strategically, technology can take language education to the next level by making it more accessible, personalised and engaging.

New vocabulary

  • round-the-clock access: access available at any time of day or night — khả năng tiếp cận mọi lúc, 24/7.
Synonyms: 24/7 access, constant access, unrestricted access
Antonyms: limited access, restricted access, occasional access
Example: “Digital platforms give learners round-the-clock access to lessons.”
  • exposure to authentic input: contact with genuine language used naturally by native speakers — tiếp xúc với nguồn ngôn ngữ chân thực.
Synonyms: authentic language exposure, real-life input, natural language contact
Antonyms: artificial input, limited exposure, textbook-only learning
Example: “Technology provides enormous exposure to authentic input.”
  • AI-powered: operated or enhanced using artificial intelligence — được vận hành/hỗ trợ bởi trí tuệ nhân tạo.
    Synonyms: AI-driven, AI-enabled, intelligent
    Antonyms: manual, human-only, non-automated
Example: “An AI-powered language tool can simulate conversations.”
  • self-discipline: the ability to control your behaviour and maintain effort — tính tự giác, khả năng tự kiểm soát.
    Synonyms: self-control, willpower, self-regulation
Antonyms: indiscipline, impulsiveness, lack of control
Example: “Learners still need self-discipline to use these resources consistently.”
  • take something to the next level: improve something significantly — đưa một lĩnh vực lên một tầm cao mới.
    Synonyms: enhance, elevate, improve substantially
    Antonyms: undermine, worsen, hold back
Example: “Technology can take language education to the next level.”

2.6. Should schools teach more foreign languages?

Yes, I strongly believe schools should offer students opportunities to learn more foreign languages.
The first major benefit is that multilingual education can strengthen students' communication skills (collocation – abilities needed to communicate effectively; kỹ năng giao tiếp) and prepare them for an increasingly interconnected world.
For example, students who learn English and another foreign language may eventually find it easier to communicate with international classmates, tourists or colleagues.
Another important advantage is that learning several languages can broaden students' cultural perspective (collocation – a wider way of understanding cultures and societies; góc nhìn văn hóa rộng hơn).
It encourages them to appreciate cultural differences and become less likely to judge unfamiliar customs according to their own standards.
For instance, learning a European or Asian language can expose students to different traditions, social norms and ways of expressing ideas.
In the long run, being multilingual (adj – able to speak several languages; biết nhiều ngôn ngữ) could give young people a competitive edge (collocation – an advantage over competitors; lợi thế cạnh tranh) when applying for university places or entering the job market.
That said, schools should avoid overloading students with too many subjects, so foreign-language programmes need to be well-designed, practical and supported by qualified teachers.>> 🔥 Form đăng kí giải đề thi thật IELTS 4 kĩ năng kèm bài giải bộ đề 100 đề PART 2 IELTS SPEAKING quý đang thi (update hàng tuần) từ IELTS TUTOR
