Describe a game you played in your childhood

  • What the game was
    • I must say that one of the games that holds a special place in my childhood is the MOBA game called "League of Legends" or simply LOL.
    • LOL is a game where players combat enemies to destroy their bases, and each hero has unique skills, adding to the game's specialty.
  • When you played it + Who you played with
  • How you felt about the game
    • To me, playing League of Legends with my friends was an exhilarating experience FOR MANY REASONS:
      • FIRSTLY, It fostered a sense of camaraderie among us and forged strong bonds. Throughout the game, we lived by the quote, "If you want to go fast, go alone; but if you want to go far, teamwork will get you there."
      • SECONDLY, Personally, I felt that this game helped me become more organized and plan ahead. It incentivized me to think logically while making transactions or dealing with challenges.

IELTS TUTOR gợi ý bài tham khảo:

Today, I would like to tell you about a game that holds a sentimental value (giá trị tình cảm – emotional importance) in my childhood, which is the MOBA game called League of Legends, often abbreviated as LOL.

I first started playing this game when I was around 14 years old, at a time when online games were becoming a social glue (chất kết nối xã hội – something that brings people together). I was introduced to it by my close friends, and soon it became our after-school ritual (thói quen sau giờ học – a regular activity done repeatedly). We would gather at a nearby internet café or play from home while staying connected through voice chat, which created a strong sense of shared experience (trải nghiệm chung – something experienced together).>> 🔥 Form đăng kí giải đề thi thật IELTS 4 kĩ năng kèm bài giải bộ đề 100 đề PART 2 IELTS SPEAKING quý đang thi (update hàng tuần) từ IELTS TUTOR

As for the game itself, League of Legends is a strategy-driven (định hướng chiến lược – requiring careful planning) multiplayer game where two teams compete to destroy each other’s base. Each player controls a champion with distinct skill sets (bộ kỹ năng riêng biệt – unique abilities), which makes teamwork and coordination absolutely crucial. What fascinated me the most was its steep learning curve (đường cong học tập dốc – something difficult to master quickly). I was especially intrigued by how my friends could pull off flawless combos (chuỗi kỹ năng hoàn hảo – perfectly executed skill combinations), which motivated me to improve.

Playing this game with my friends was an exhilarating experience (trải nghiệm đầy hứng khởi – extremely exciting feeling) for several reasons. Firstly, it fostered a strong sense of camaraderie (tình đồng đội – mutual trust and friendship) and helped us forge long-lasting bonds (mối quan hệ bền chặt – relationships that endure over time). We quickly learned that success in the game depended on seamless teamwork (làm việc nhóm ăn ý – smooth cooperation), which perfectly echoed the idea that collective effort outweighs individual brilliance.

Secondly, on a personal level, the game helped me develop a forward-thinking mindset (tư duy nhìn xa – ability to plan ahead). I became more methodical (có phương pháp – systematic and organized) in my decision-making, whether it was managing in-game resources or responding to unexpected challenges. In many ways, the skills I picked up were transferable skills (kỹ năng có thể áp dụng – skills useful in real life), such as logical thinking and quick problem-solving.

Looking back, although I no longer play the game as frequently, League of Legends remains a defining part (phần quan trọng mang tính định hình – something that shapes who you are) of my childhood. It was not merely a source of entertainment but also a platform where I learned teamwork, resilience, and strategic thinking.

2.1. What games do kids like to play now?

Answer:

Kids today are strongly attracted to digital-centric entertainment (entertainment mainly based on technology – giải trí lấy công nghệ làm trung tâm) because it offers instant stimulation and constant novelty.
Many children spend hours on fast-paced mobile games (games with rapid actions and quick feedback – trò chơi có nhịp độ nhanh) since these platforms provide rewards, levels, and social interaction.
For example, online multiplayer games allow kids to compete with peers worldwide, which makes gaming highly addictive and socially engaging.
As a result, screen-based play has become a dominant part of modern childhood.

At the same time, traditional play has not completely disappeared, especially skill-building outdoor activities (activities that develop physical or mental abilities – hoạt động phát triển kỹ năng).
Many kids still enjoy football, cycling, or playground games because they promote hands-on learning (learning through direct experience – học qua trải nghiệm thực tế).
For instance, team sports help children develop coordination, discipline, and face-to-face communication skills.
Therefore, children nowadays tend to combine digital games with physical play rather than choosing only one type.

New vocabulary list:

2.2. Do boys and girls play different games?

Answer:

Traditionally, boys and girls have gravitated toward different games due to deep-rooted gender norms (long-established social expectations – chuẩn mực giới ăn sâu).
Boys are often encouraged to play physically demanding sports (sports requiring strength and stamina – thể thao đòi hỏi thể lực), while girls may be steered toward less aggressive activities.
For example, football is frequently associated with boys, whereas dancing is often marketed to girls.
This pattern reinforces stereotypical expectations from a young age.

However, these distinctions are becoming less rigid thanks to a growing culture of inclusivity (increasing acceptance of diversity – văn hóa đề cao sự hòa nhập).
Many parents now support children in choosing games based on interest rather than gender.
For instance, it is no longer unusual to see girls in martial arts or boys enjoying creative role-play games.
As a result, game preferences are increasingly shaped by personality instead of gender.

2.3. Are outdoor sports important for kids?

Answer:

Outdoor sports are essential because they contribute to well-rounded physical development (balanced growth of the body – sự phát triển thể chất toàn diện).
Regular participation improves stamina, coordination, and overall health.
For example, children who play sports outdoors are less likely to develop sedentary habits.
This creates a strong foundation for lifelong fitness.

Equally important, outdoor sports support social-emotional growth (development of emotions and social skills – phát triển cảm xúc và xã hội).
Children learn teamwork, conflict resolution, and emotional resilience through group activities.
For instance, losing a match teaches kids how to handle disappointment constructively.
Therefore, outdoor sports play a vital role beyond physical health alone.

2.4. Why do people play different games now than before?

Answer:

One major reason is rapid technological advancement (fast development of technology – sự phát triển công nghệ nhanh chóng), which has transformed how people play.
Modern games are more immersive, interactive, and accessible than traditional ones.
For example, smartphones allow people to play anytime and anywhere.
This convenience has reshaped leisure habits.

Another factor is shifting lifestyle priorities (changing values and daily routines – sự thay đổi trong lối sống).
People today often seek quick entertainment due to busy schedules.
For instance, short digital games fit better into modern work-life patterns than long traditional games.
As a result, gaming preferences naturally evolve over time.

2.5. Is winning important in games?

Answer:

Winning matters because it provides a tangible sense of achievement (a clear feeling of success – cảm giác thành tựu rõ ràng).
It motivates players to improve skills and remain committed.
For example, competitive games often push individuals to train harder.
This can foster discipline and perseverance.

However, overemphasizing victory may undermine the intrinsic value of play (the enjoyment of playing itself – giá trị nội tại của việc chơi).
Games should also teach cooperation, fairness, and enjoyment.
For instance, children who focus only on winning may experience stress or frustration.
Therefore, winning should be balanced with personal growth and enjoyment.

New vocabulary list:

  • a tangible sense of achievement: clear success feeling – cảm giác thành tựu rõ ràng
Synonyms: visible success, measurable accomplishment, concrete reward
Antonyms: failure, disappointment, lack of progress
IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: “Winning matters because it provides a tangible sense of achievement…”

  • the intrinsic value of play: inherent enjoyment – giá trị nội tại của việc chơi
Synonyms: inherent enjoyment, internal motivation, pure fun
Antonyms: external pressure, forced participation, obligation
IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: “undermine the intrinsic value of play…”

  • May undermine (modal verb for possibility)
→ có thể làm suy yếu

2.6. Which is better, individual games or team-based games?

Answer:

Individual games are beneficial because they encourage self-directed improvement (personal effort without reliance on others – sự tự hoàn thiện bản thân).
Players learn independence and accountability for their own performance.
For example, solo sports like tennis require strong mental focus.
This builds confidence and self-discipline.

On the other hand, team-based games promote collective problem-solving (solving issues as a group – giải quyết vấn đề tập thể).
They teach communication, cooperation, and leadership skills.
For instance, football players must coordinate strategies to succeed.
Ultimately, both types are valuable depending on personal goals and preferences.
