IELTS TUTOR gợi ý bài tham khảo:
Today, I would like to tell you about my boyfriend, who is one of the most brilliant minds (brilliant minds – những bộ óc xuất chúng – exceptionally intelligent people) I’ve ever met.
He is currently a university student majoring in mathematics for the gifted (mathematics for the gifted – toán chuyên – advanced math curriculum for talented students) and has consistently ranked at the top of his class.
What makes him stand out intellectually (stand out intellectually – nổi bật về mặt trí tuệ – to be noticeably intelligent compared to others) is not just his academic achievements but also his ability to solve complex problems under pressure.
I consider him intelligent for two main reasons.
Firstly, he has a razor-sharp mind (razor-sharp mind – đầu óc sắc bén – extremely intelligent and quick-thinking) and can quickly analyze patterns or find elegant solutions in situations that baffle others. For example, he once figured out an efficient way to simplify a particularly challenging calculus problem in just a few minutes, while even his professor was taken aback. His ability to absorb knowledge like a sponge (absorb knowledge like a sponge – tiếp thu kiến thức rất nhanh – to learn and remember things quickly) is nothing short of impressive.>> tham khảo CẦN VIẾT & THU ÂM BAO NHIÊU BÀI ĐỂ ĐẠT 8.0 SPEAKING & 7.0 WRITING?
Secondly, he’s not only good with numbers; he also possesses emotional intelligence (emotional intelligence – trí tuệ cảm xúc – the ability to understand and manage emotions well) which allows him to stay calm and help others during stressful group projects or tight deadlines. This balance between academic brilliance (academic brilliance – sự thông minh trong học thuật – exceptional academic ability) and interpersonal skills is quite rare. In my opinion, he is the epitome of a well-rounded individual (epitome – hình mẫu – a perfect example of a quality or type), someone who is both intellectually gifted and emotionally mature.

IV. Part 3
1. Are people born smart or learn to be?
I believe intelligence is shaped by both genetic predisposition (genetic predisposition - khuynh hướng di truyền: the natural ability inherited from parents) and environmental influences. Some individuals are naturally gifted (naturally gifted - bẩm sinh có tài năng: having an innate talent), which means they grasp abstract ideas quickly without much effort. However, others can become equally smart through rigorous training (rigorous training - đào tạo nghiêm khắc: intensive and disciplined practice) and consistent practice over time. For example, a child born with a sharp intellect (sharp intellect - trí tuệ sắc bén: a very quick and accurate mind) may still underperform without guidance, while a student who works hard can outperform their peers. Intelligence, in this sense, is a fluid trait (fluid trait - đặc điểm linh hoạt: something that can change or develop), rather than a fixed one. In my opinion, nurture often outweighs nature, especially in today’s information-saturated environment (information-saturated environment - môi trường ngập tràn thông tin: a context full of data and knowledge). So, while genes may set the baseline, the brain's development hinges on life experiences and educational exposure (educational exposure - tiếp xúc giáo dục: access to learning and schooling).
2. Are intelligent people happier?
Not necessarily, because intelligence can sometimes become a double-edged sword (double-edged sword - con dao hai lưỡi: something with both advantages and disadvantages). On one hand, smart individuals tend to have better problem-solving skills and cognitive flexibility (cognitive flexibility - sự linh hoạt trong nhận thức: the ability to think in varied ways), which help them navigate life’s challenges effectively. This often leads to financial stability and personal accomplishments, both of which are strong contributors to happiness. On the other hand, highly intelligent people may also be prone to overthinking (overthinking - suy nghĩ quá mức: thinking too much or in a way that causes anxiety) and emotional detachment (emotional detachment - sự tách biệt cảm xúc: lack of connection to feelings), which can hinder their social life. For example, a genius scientist might struggle to maintain deep relationships due to their introspective nature (introspective nature - tính hướng nội sâu sắc: tendency to reflect inwardly). Therefore, while intelligence can open doors, it doesn't guarantee happiness. Happiness is more closely tied to emotional intelligence, resilience, and a sense of purpose (sense of purpose - cảm giác có mục đích: feeling that one's life has meaning).
3. Can smart people struggle in some areas?
Absolutely, even highly intelligent people can face difficulties, especially in non-academic domains (non-academic domains - lĩnh vực ngoài học thuật: areas not related to study or theory). Being book-smart doesn’t always translate into interpersonal competence (interpersonal competence - năng lực giao tiếp: ability to interact well with others). For instance, someone might excel at theoretical physics but find it hard to read social cues or express themselves emotionally. Moreover, many intelligent people set unrealistically high standards (unrealistically high standards - tiêu chuẩn cao không thực tế: expectations that are difficult to meet), which can lead to disappointment and burnout. A good example is a top student who breaks down under pressure when entering the competitive job market. In some cases, their strengths in logic and analysis may come at the expense of practical life skills (practical life skills - kỹ năng sống thực tế: skills needed to manage everyday tasks). So, intelligence is not a one-size-fits-all asset (one-size-fits-all asset - tài sản không phù hợp với mọi tình huống: a benefit that works in all contexts). It needs to be complemented by emotional intelligence, social skills, and adaptability to ensure overall success.
