Today, I would like to tell you about an unforgettable experience when I was not allowed to use my mobile phone during a military-style orientation camp organized by my university last summer.
The event took place at a remote training facility (khu huấn luyện biệt lập – a place located far away from cities and distractions) on the outskirts of the city. It lasted for nearly one week, and all freshmen were required to participate in various team-building activities, physical exercises, and discipline-focused workshops. Right after arriving at the camp, the instructors announced a strict phone-free policy (chính sách cấm dùng điện thoại – a rule prohibiting the use of mobile phones) because they wanted students to fully concentrate on the program and interact more with one another face to face.>> 🔥 Form đăng kí giải đề thi thật IELTS 4 kĩ năng kèm bài giải bộ đề 100 đề PART 2 IELTS SPEAKING quý đang thi (update hàng tuần) từ IELTS TUTOR
At first, I found the rule extremely frustrating because I’m so accustomed to checking my phone every few minutes. As someone who relies heavily on social media and instant messaging apps, being disconnected from the outside world gave me a sense of withdrawal symptoms (triệu chứng thiếu hụt – uncomfortable feelings caused by suddenly stopping something you depend on). I even worried that I might miss important notifications or updates from my friends and family.
However, after a day or two, I gradually adapted to the situation and started noticing the unexpected benefits of this technology-free environment (môi trường không công nghệ – a place without technological distractions). One of the most memorable aspects was that everyone became far more sociable and approachable. Instead of staring at screens during breaks, we actually engaged in meaningful conversations, shared personal stories, and participated in outdoor activities together. For example, one evening, my group gathered around a campfire and played team-bonding games for hours. Without mobile phones constantly ringing or vibrating, the atmosphere felt much more genuine and tight-knit (gắn bó chặt chẽ – closely connected and supportive).
Another thing I really appreciated was how the experience helped me improve my concentration and reduce my dependence on technology. Normally, I have a pretty short attention span because I’m constantly bombarded with notifications and online content. Yet during the camp, I was able to focus entirely on each activity, whether it was obstacle-course training or leadership workshops. It made me realize how time-consuming (tốn nhiều thời gian – requiring a lot of time) and distracting smartphones can sometimes be.
Looking back, although I initially disliked the restriction, I now think it was a truly eye-opening experience. It not only allowed me to build stronger friendships with my classmates but also taught me the importance of maintaining a healthy balance between the digital world and real life. I would even say it was one of the most thought-provoking (gợi nhiều suy nghĩ – making people think deeply about something) experiences I’ve ever had.

IV. Part 3
1. Do young and old people use phones in the same way?
No, I do not think younger and older generations use mobile phones in exactly the same way because they usually have different priorities and lifestyles. Young people tend to rely heavily on smartphones for entertainment and communication, as many of them are highly tech-savvy (am hiểu công nghệ - very skilled at using technology) and spend hours on social-media platforms or mobile games. In addition, teenagers often use phones as an all-in-one device for studying, shopping, and even creating online content. For example, many university students nowadays attend online classes, edit videos, and run small businesses entirely on their phones. On the other hand, older adults are generally more function-oriented (thiên về chức năng - focused mainly on practical purposes) when using mobile devices. They usually prefer basic functions such as making calls, texting family members, or reading online newspapers rather than following digital trends. For instance, many elderly people in Vietnam use smartphones mainly for video calls with relatives living far away or checking health-related information. Therefore, although both age groups use the same device, their habits and purposes are noticeably different.

→ Thanh thiếu niên thường dùng điện thoại cho các hoạt động cần truy cập Internet.
2. What positive and negative effects do mobile phones have on friendship?
I believe mobile phones have both beneficial and harmful impacts on friendships depending on how people use them. On the positive side, smartphones make communication much more convenient because people can stay in touch regardless of geographical distance. Many friendships become more long-lasting (lâu bền - continuing for a long period of time) since messaging apps and video calls help individuals maintain regular contact. Furthermore, social-media platforms allow friends to share memorable experiences instantly and strengthen emotional bonds. For example, international students can still communicate with childhood friends every day despite studying overseas. However, excessive phone usage can also create a sense of emotional detachment (sự xa cách về cảm xúc - lack of emotional closeness) between friends in real life. Some people become too absorbed in their screens during face-to-face conversations, which may make others feel ignored or disrespected. A good example is when a group of friends gathers at a café, yet everyone spends more time scrolling through social media than interacting with one another. Therefore, mobile phones can either strengthen or weaken friendships depending on whether users maintain a healthy balance.
New Vocabulary

→ Điện thoại không những giúp giao tiếp mà còn củng cố các mối quan hệ. - Gerund after preposition
IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: “People spend time scrolling through social media.”
→ Mọi người dành thời gian lướt mạng xã hội.
3. Is it a waste of time to take pictures with mobile phones?
I do not think taking photos with mobile phones is necessarily a waste of time because it can serve several meaningful purposes. First, photographs allow people to preserve valuable memories and document important milestones in life. Many individuals enjoy capturing once-in-a-lifetime (có một không hai - extremely rare or unique) moments such as graduation ceremonies, family reunions, or overseas trips. In addition, taking pictures can encourage people to become more creative by improving their photography and editing skills. For example, some young people start with smartphone photography as a hobby and later become professional content creators. Nevertheless, taking too many photos may become time-consuming (tốn thời gian - requiring a lot of time) if people focus more on recording experiences than actually enjoying them. Some tourists spend hours searching for the perfect angle instead of appreciating the scenery with their own eyes. A clear example is visitors at famous attractions who continuously retake selfies merely to upload them onto social-media platforms. Therefore, taking photos is not inherently wasteful, but moderation is certainly important.>> 🔥 Nhắn zalo 0905834420 join group zalo Hóng đề thi máy 4 skills để cập nhật đề thi thật 4 kĩ năng hằng ngày [Kèm giải & đề làm online]

4. Many people think mobile phones can be annoying at times. Can you give any examples of that?
Yes, there are many situations in which mobile phones can become extremely irritating in daily life. One common problem is that some people speak loudly on their phones in quiet public places such as libraries, cinemas, or waiting rooms. This kind of attention-seeking (thích gây chú ý - behaving in a way that attracts attention) behavior can disturb everyone nearby and create an unpleasant atmosphere. Moreover, constant notifications and ringing sounds may interrupt important conversations or reduce people’s concentration at work. For example, students often lose focus during lectures because their classmates continuously receive messages or scroll through short-form videos. Another annoying issue is that some individuals become overly screen-obsessed (ám ảnh màn hình - spending too much time looking at screens) and ignore the people around them. It is quite common to see families sitting together at restaurants while every member is staring at their own device instead of interacting face to face. Therefore, although smartphones are extremely useful, inappropriate phone habits can negatively affect social interactions and public etiquette.

→ Các gia đình ngồi cùng nhau trong khi mỗi người nhìn vào điện thoại. - Passive voice
IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: “People can be disturbed by loud phone calls.”
→ Mọi người có thể bị làm phiền bởi các cuộc gọi lớn tiếng.
5. Do you think there should be laws on the use of mobile phones?
Yes, I believe certain laws regarding mobile-phone usage are necessary because they help protect public safety and maintain social order. One important regulation should target drivers who use phones while operating vehicles since distracted driving can lead to serious accidents. Strict punishments may discourage this highly life-threatening (đe dọa tính mạng - extremely dangerous) behavior and raise public awareness about road safety. For example, many countries impose heavy fines on motorists who text or answer calls while driving. In addition, governments should introduce rules to prevent privacy-invasive (xâm phạm quyền riêng tư - violating personal privacy) activities such as secretly recording others or spreading private information online without consent. Without proper regulations, mobile phones could easily be misused for cyberbullying, online harassment, or digital scams. A good example is when someone uploads another person’s embarrassing video onto social media purely for entertainment purposes. Therefore, although people should have freedom to use smartphones, legal boundaries are still essential to ensure responsible behavior.
