IELTS TUTOR gợi ý bài tham khảo:
Today, I would like to tell you about a time when I waited for something truly special, which was the long-awaited arrival of my aunt who had been living in Holland for several years.
What I was waiting for was her return to Viet Nam so that she could attend my wedding ceremony. She had promised to come in July 2021; however, because of the global pandemic (đại dịch toàn cầu – a worldwide outbreak of disease), international travel became extremely complicated, and she struggled to manage (xoay xở – succeed in doing something difficult) the journey as borders were repeatedly closed.
As for where I waited, I spent most of that period at home, constantly checking my phone for updates. When the virus was spreading at a rapid pace (tốc độ nhanh chóng – very fast speed), I almost lost hope of seeing her on such a once-in-a-lifetime occasion, which made the waiting feel emotionally draining.
This event was special for two main reasons. First, I hadn’t seen my aunt for nearly two years, so our reunion was deeply meaningful. Second, she had played a hands-on role (vai trò trực tiếp – being actively involved) in guiding me through how to organise a well-planned wedding, so her presence would truly grace the ceremony (làm buổi lễ thêm long trọng – add honor and importance to the event).
While I was waiting, my emotions were on a real roller coaster. When she suddenly called to say she would arrive after 15 days, I was in a state of euphoria (trạng thái hưng phấn tột độ – intense happiness). However, as the days dragged on, I became increasingly impatient (nôn nóng – unable to wait calmly), and it felt as if those 15 days had turned into 15 months. I was so over-the-moon excited (vui sướng tột độ – extremely happy) that I could barely sleep, managing only two or three hours a night. In the end, when she finally arrived, I felt a huge sense of relief (cảm giác nhẹ nhõm – feeling free from worry) and overwhelming joy.

V. Part 3
1. On what occasions do people usually need to wait?
People usually need to wait in situations where institutional procedures (official systems that require formal steps – quy trình mang tính thể chế) are involved. In many cases, services such as banks, hospitals, and government offices operate on a first-come-first-served basis (a system where people are helped in order of arrival – ai đến trước được phục vụ trước). This is mainly because these places deal with a high volume of clients (a large number of service users – số lượng người sử dụng dịch vụ lớn) every day. For example, patients often wait for consultations due to staff shortages (a lack of employees – tình trạng thiếu nhân sự) and limited resources.
Another common occasion for waiting is transportation, especially in peak-hour traffic (the busiest time of day – giờ cao điểm). Public transport systems are frequently affected by operational delays (problems that slow down services – sự trì hoãn vận hành). This can test people’s patience, particularly commuters who are under time pressure (stress caused by limited time – áp lực thời gian). For instance, long queues at airports during holiday seasons are a clear example of unavoidable waiting.>> 🔥 Form đăng kí giải đề thi thật IELTS 4 kĩ năng kèm bài giải bộ đề 100 đề PART 2 IELTS SPEAKING quý đang thi (update hàng tuần) từ IELTS TUTOR
2. Who behave better when waiting, children or adults?
Generally speaking, adults tend to behave better when waiting because they have developed emotional regulation (the ability to control emotions – khả năng điều tiết cảm xúc) over time. Life experience teaches them that waiting is often inevitable (cannot be avoided – không thể tránh khỏi) in many real-life situations. As a result, adults are more likely to stay calm and engage in time-filling activities (things done to pass time – hoạt động giết thời gian) such as reading or checking messages. For example, an adult waiting at a clinic may quietly scroll through their phone instead of showing frustration.
In contrast, children often struggle due to their limited attention span (short ability to concentrate – khả năng tập trung ngắn). Waiting can feel boring and uncomfortable because they lack coping mechanisms (strategies to deal with stress – cơ chế đối phó). This may lead to restless behavior (inability to stay calm – hành vi bồn chồn) or emotional outbursts. For instance, a child standing in a long supermarket queue may cry or complain loudly, especially when tired or hungry.
3. Do you think waiting is harder now than in the past?
Yes, I believe waiting is harder nowadays because modern society is dominated by a fast-paced lifestyle (a way of life focused on speed and efficiency – lối sống nhanh). People have become accustomed to instant gratification (immediate satisfaction – sự thỏa mãn tức thì) due to technology. With smartphones providing on-demand services (services available immediately – dịch vụ theo yêu cầu), patience has gradually declined. For example, slow internet connections can frustrate people far more than long waits did in the past.
Another reason is the rise of heightened expectations (stronger demands for efficiency – kỳ vọng cao hơn) in daily life. People now expect services to be time-efficient (saving time – tiết kiệm thời gian) and seamless. When delays occur, they feel like a violation of personal schedules, creating psychological discomfort (mental unease – sự khó chịu về mặt tâm lý). For instance, delivery delays often trigger complaints because consumers expect speed as a standard, not a luxury.
