  • What it was
    • Today, I would like to tell you about a challenging task I managed to accomplish, which was preparing for the IELTS exam to achieve a score of 6.5 for my higher education overseas.
  • When and where you faced it
    • I had been using English for more than five years, but when I decided to study abroad, obtaining a suitable IELTS certificate became a significant hurdle (rào cản - an obstacle or difficulty that needs to be overcome).
  • Why you thought it was a difficult challenge
    • This test is known to be extremely demanding (rất khó khăn - requiring great effort and ability), designed to stretch our English abilities to their limits.
  • And explain how you felt at the time.

I vividly remember feeling anxious (lo lắng - experiencing worry, unease, or nervousness) and overwhelmed (choáng ngợp - feeling completely overcome by emotions or tasks) for many reasons

      • Main idea 1: the process was anything but easy (hoàn toàn không dễ dàng - extremely difficult).
        • Supporting idea: No matter how hard I tried initially, I was stuck with a score of 5.0, which left me frustrated (chán nản - feeling annoyed or upset due to failure or obstacles) and on the verge of giving up (sắp bỏ cuộc - almost quitting due to discouragement).
      • Main idea 2: The most difficult part was maintaining motivation (động lực - a reason or drive to keep going) when progress seemed nonexistent (không tồn tại - appearing to make no improvement).
        • Supporting idea: Thankfully, my teacher constantly encouraged me, reminding me that persistence (sự kiên trì - the ability to keep trying despite difficulties) would eventually yield results (mang lại kết quả - produce successful outcomes).

Finally, after months of rigorous practice (luyện tập nghiêm ngặt - intensive and disciplined training) and sheer determination (quyết tâm tuyệt đối - strong and unwavering willpower), my hard work paid off (được đáp đền - resulted in success). This experience taught me the value of perseverance (sự bền bỉ - continuous effort despite difficulties) and resilience (khả năng phục hồi - the ability to recover from setbacks), qualities that I carry with me to this day.

IELTS TUTOR gợi ý bài tham khảo:

Today, I would like to tell you about a particularly daunting (khó khăn, thử thách lớn - extremely difficult and challenging) task I managed to complete—preparing for the IELTS exam to secure a score of 6.5, which was a prerequisite (điều kiện tiên quyết - something required as a prior condition) for my higher education overseas.

I had been using English for more than five years, but when I decided to study abroad, obtaining an IELTS certificate at the required level proved to be a formidable (khó đạt được - inspiring fear or respect due to difficulty) hurdle. This test is notorious for being exceedingly (cực kỳ - to an extreme degree) demanding, designed to push test-takers to their linguistic limits (thúc đẩy đến giới hạn ngôn ngữ - force individuals to use English at the highest level possible).

I vividly remember feeling on edge (bồn chồn - anxious and unsettled) and mentally drained (kiệt sức về tinh thần - extremely tired mentally) for various reasons.

  • Firstly, the entire process was anything but easy. No matter how hard I tried initially, I found myself stuck in a rut (mắc kẹt trong lối mòn - unable to make progress) at band 5.0, which left me feeling utterly (hoàn toàn - completely) frustrated and on the brink of (sắp sửa - about to) giving up.

  • The most challenging part, however, was sustaining motivation. There were times when progress seemed virtually nonexistent (gần như không có - almost absent), and I doubted whether I would ever reach my goal. Fortunately, my teacher’s unwavering (không lung lay - steady and firm) encouragement kept me going. She often reminded me that tenacity (sự kiên trì - determination and persistence) and perseverance would eventually bear fruit (mang lại thành quả - produce success after effort).

After months of grueling (vất vả, gian khổ - extremely tiring and demanding) preparation, paired with sheer determination, my hard work ultimately paid off. Not only did I achieve my target score, but this journey also instilled in me a deep appreciation for resilience (sự bền bỉ - the ability to recover from difficulties) and self-discipline (tính kỷ luật bản thân - the ability to control and push oneself toward a goal).

IV. Part 3

1. Why do some people enjoy doing extreme sports?

Extreme sports attract thrill-seekers primarily due to the adrenaline rush (cảm giác hưng phấn do adrenaline – a sudden burst of energy and excitement caused by engaging in high-risk activities) they experience. These sports push individuals to their physical and mental limits (giới hạn thể chất và tinh thần – the maximum level of endurance and psychological resilience a person can handle), creating an exhilarating sense of accomplishment. For example, skydiving provides a once-in-a-lifetime experience (trải nghiệm chỉ có một lần trong đời – a rare and highly exciting opportunity that may not happen again), where a person defies gravity and enjoys breathtaking views. Furthermore, many athletes are drawn to the camaraderie (tình bạn thân thiết – a strong sense of friendship and support among people in a group) that extreme sports communities offer. These groups foster unwavering support (sự ủng hộ không lay chuyển – consistent and strong encouragement, regardless of circumstances), motivating individuals to refine their skills. For instance, professional rock climbers often train in teams, relying on each other for safety and technique enhancement.

New Vocabulary

  • adrenaline rush – cảm giác hưng phấn do adrenaline
  • physical and mental limits – giới hạn thể chất và tinh thần
  • once-in-a-lifetime experience – trải nghiệm chỉ có một lần trong đời

  • Antonyms of “adrenaline rush”: boredom, dullness, lethargy
  • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: “Extreme sports attract thrill-seekers primarily due to the adrenaline rush they experience.”

Difficult Grammar Structures

  1. Reduced relative clause

    • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: “These sports push individuals to their physical and mental limits, creating an exhilarating sense of accomplishment.”

2. What challenges would people face when learning new sports?

One significant challenge is coordination difficulties (khó khăn về sự phối hợp – issues with controlling different body movements in a synchronized manner), especially for beginners. Many sports require precise body mechanics (cơ chế cơ thể chính xác – the correct movement techniques to perform an activity safely and efficiently), which can be daunting to master. For instance, in gymnastics, failing to execute a well-timed (được tính toán thời gian chuẩn xác – done at the right moment) flip can result in serious injuries. Additionally, mental resilience (sự kiên trì về tinh thần – the ability to recover from setbacks and stay motivated) is a major obstacle. New learners often experience performance anxiety (lo lắng về màn trình diễn – fear of failing or being judged while performing a task), making it hard to improve. A case in point is public swimming lessons, where self-conscious individuals struggle to maintain focus due to pressure from onlookers.

New Vocabulary

  • coordination difficulties – khó khăn về sự phối hợp
  • precise body mechanics – cơ chế cơ thể chính xác
  • well-timed – được tính toán thời gian chuẩn xác
  • mental resilience – sự kiên trì về tinh thần

    • Vietnamese: “Chưa bao giờ tôi thấy ai học thể dục dụng cụ mà không gặp khó khăn về sự phối hợp.”

3. Is it easy for children to overcome a challenge?

It depends on their intrinsic motivation (động lực nội tại – the natural desire to achieve something without external rewards). When children are genuinely interested in an activity, they tend to exhibit exceptional perseverance (sự kiên trì phi thường – outstanding determination to continue despite difficulties), which aids in overcoming obstacles. A good example is young chess players who train rigorously to improve their strategic thinking. However, external factors, such as peer pressure (áp lực từ bạn bè – influence from friends to behave in a certain way), can either help or hinder their progress. Children in competitive environments often experience self-doubt (sự nghi ngờ bản thân – lack of confidence in one’s abilities), making it harder to persist.

New Vocabulary

  • intrinsic motivation – động lực nội tại
  • exceptional perseverance – sự kiên trì phi thường
  • peer pressure – áp lực từ bạn bè
  • self-doubt – sự nghi ngờ bản thân

4. Do most people choose to face a challenge alone or with others?

Many individuals prefer collective problem-solving (giải quyết vấn đề tập thể – tackling an issue with a group rather than individually) because it allows for diverse perspectives (quan điểm đa dạng – different viewpoints from various people). In team-based challenges, participants can brainstorm ideas and benefit from mutual encouragement (sự khích lệ lẫn nhau – support and motivation exchanged between individuals). For instance, students preparing for an exam often form study groups to share knowledge. On the other hand, some people favor solitary reflection (suy ngẫm một mình – the act of thinking deeply about a problem alone), as it helps them analyze situations independently. Many successful entrepreneurs spend hours refining their strategies alone before seeking external input.

New Vocabulary

  • collective problem-solving – giải quyết vấn đề tập thể
  • diverse perspectives – quan điểm đa dạng
  • mutual encouragement – sự khích lệ lẫn nhau
